Types of Suffering.
Even if you don’t believe it, your life is sacred. That’s the assumption that is at the heart of the therapy I do. And, that’s why I strive to deliver evidenced-based interventions – balancing science and compassion to help you start living more fully, today. Here are some of the types of mental-health issues that you might be facing and how we might work together on them.
Stress, Anxiety, and Panic.Sometimes the people around us are not very helpful. Unfortunately, this is sometimes true of professionals who are treating you for your anxiety.
Maybe you take more-and-more prescription medications to just to feel comfortable in your own skin. Maybe you have been talking with your therapist for years about the life you want to live, but too afraid to start living it. If you want to learn to face your fears and start living more fully, consider Exposure Therapy (ERP, PE) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Both have been demonstrated effective for helping people do just that. |
Depression.
“I try so hard. But, it’s like no matter what I do, it doesn't seem to matter.”
If this statement feels true to you, you may find yourself stuck in the way many people with depression do. The more sad and depressed we feel, the more we don't want to do certain things. And, the less we do those things, the more sad and depressed we feel. It’s like a downward spiral.
The good news is there is hope. Some types of behavior therapy (Behavioral Activation, BA; Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, ACT) have been shown to be as effective as medication to alleviate depressive symptoms. But more importantly, they are aimed at helping you live a more meaningful and purpose-driven live, today – even in the midst of your suffering.

Drug & Alcohol Issues.
It is not a moral issue. I believe your substance use issue is one that is about your quality-of-life.
Sometimes we do the best we know how to do to deal with stress, pain, and loss. We walk around with lots of thoughts that hurt and worry us. And, we often go to bed with feelings like boredom, loneliness, anxiety, guilt, anger, sadness, and so on. It’s not hard to figure out that a drink or a blunt will often muffle those thoughts, or smooth over our hurt feelings.
Over time, this strategy can take a huge toll on our ability to live a life worth living. Whether it is losing a job, your driver’s license, your freedom – or, even just the ability to be present and have meaningful relationships with loved-ones – you might be starting to wonder if your use of alcohol and/or drugs (e.g. illegal, prescription, etc.) is costing you too much.
My internship and post-doctoral training was focused on applying evidence-based interventions to help people struggling with these types of issues (e.g. alcohol, opiates, stimulants, hallucinogens, etc.). If you would like to explore making some changes in your life, don’t be afraid to reach out.
